Is winter over yet?

It has been a horrendously cold winter this year!  It finally started looking nice out and just to my luck it snowed yesterday!  Its really cold in my house so whenever I’m not working on my computer or working in general I’ve been covering myself with a quilt and an electric blanket and sketching.  When it warms up I plan on completing a few sketches.

A Poster for a Gig

Every graphic designer has to come up with a unique and creative way to show their skills and potential in a resume.  I looked around the web at what other designers were doing and I think I’ve created something that no one else has.  My emphasis is on music merchandise and illustration so I created some amazing 11×17 screen printed resumes!  I have them for sale at the following link:  https://www.etsy.com/listing/271255657/11×17-silk-screened-resume?ref=pr_shop

For $13 you can hang one on your wall!

For the Love of Ivy

I am a HUGE fan of The Cramps, for the past month all I’ve listened to is Smell of Female and Stay Sick! Just in case you haven’t heard of the Cramps watch them here.  The Cramps were headed by husband and wife power couple Lux Interior and Poison Ivy and you can feel their passion for music in every recording they’ve ever produced.  I could go on and on… I made a list a couple of years ago of people I want to meet one day and Poison Ivy is the next on the list.

Anatomical Venus

I could never be a doctor, I don’t have the patience (or the money for school) but I am fascinated with the history of medicine, in particular the study of anatomy.  I also like studying the history of death and funeral rituals from around the world, in particular victorian funeral customs.  While browsing around the internet I discovered the wonderful art of Morbid Anatomy.  I’d link any of the dozen or so blogs, image archives, or found jpegs in my folder but I encourage you to do a google search yourself.  One subject that I particularly am interested in is the art of the so-called “anatomical venus.”  In the 1800’s artists would create wax models from moldings, or with their own artistic talent, of unusual medical cases or various organs for medical students to examine without having to open up a fresh cadaver.  One popular item was the Anatomical Venus, which is the full or quarter sized model of a deceased woman with a removable abdominal cavity exposing highly detailed models of internal organs.  Here is one such example: 2416846549_465185130c.jpg

I decided to draw my own Venus but add my own style to it.  The organs are obviously exaggerated and taken with some creative license.  The hair was the most fun part, I decided to make it look like intestines to make up for her missing digestive system.

An Artist in the Family

Today I am a very proud Auntie.  My darling little niece made the Kearney Hub the other day for an art contest she won.  Gracie entered the Draw Your Dreams contest where little children have to draw something that they want to do.  Most little girls want to be princesses, own a mansion, or have lots of money but my little Gracie wants to ride a bucking bronco in the rodeo.  Her drawing was so lovely that she won a $1,000 scholarship for college, and she’s 8 years old!

I’m so proud that I’m an influence in this little girl’s life.  When she was a toddler just learning how to talk I used to draw pictures of animals and ask her what sound the animal made.  And ever since she could hold a pen Gracie and I have been drawing together.  She tells me she wants to be like me when she grows up which honestly scares me a little.  I hope this little girl becomes greater than I ever will be.

Song Lyric Typography

ghouls night outteenagers from mars copydevils_edited-1

One thing I definitely want to do more of is song lyric typography.  These are three completed works that I’ve done over the past three years.  All of these are based on Misfits songs, “Ghoul’s Night Out,” “Teenagers From Mars,” and “The Devil’s Whorehouse.”  I started on one the other week based on The Cramps’ “Jackyard Backoff” but I think I want to do a rework before I commit to coloring.

I’m a Soul Man!

This was one of the album covers I created for my senior thesis.  I created a record store called Brick and Mortar and came up with several independent artists for their label.  One of the bands I created was Sister Christian, an all female rockabilly punk band inspired by traditional Catholicism.
