New Year’s Baby 2016

Every year at the Kearney Hub we have a “contest” with the local hospital.  Whoever has the first baby of 2016 gets a bunch of goodies from several sponsors in town.  This year I got to design a full page spread in a Saturday paper detailing the prizes.  I was only allotted a short amount of time to do this which meant I couldn’t create my own graphics but I did have fun selecting from the limited pool of clip art already owned by the Hub.

Water Babies

I’m a big fan of folk art in general but probably my favorite kind is east Asian/Japanese traditional art.  I love woodprints and watercolors, like everybody else, but I particularly like textile designs and silk art.

I find designs like this especially adorable.

I made this piece over a winter weekend while I was daydreaming about sticking my feet in a warm pond and little fat baby kittens running about.

Altar Society

My mother is a member of the Altar Society at the Elm Creek Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Its a group of old ladies that organize fundraisers, community events, and the goings on of the church.  My father and I like to joke and say that the Altar Society is secretly a motorcycle gang, so for Christmas I designed a fake back patch for my mom’s gang.  She didn’t like it.  She said it was sacreligious.

About Me

My name is Laura “Miss” Fear and I am a graphic designer out of Kearney Nebraska.  When I was a kid growing up I loved watching cartoons and started writing my own screenplays from an early age.  I taught myself how to draw from library books and hours of practice when I was 12.  In my teenage years I started moving up the ranks on social networking sites for artists and was published by the time I was 16.  At 17 I went to school at the University of Nebraska at Kearney where I graduated at 21 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design with an emphasis on illustration.

During my time at UNK I kept myself busy by working several part time jobs at once and by doing freelance illustration work for my friends, fans, and favorite bands.  Currently I am employed full time by Berkshire Hathaway Media doing graphic design for the Kearney Hub.  My current responsibilities include creating classified ads for my various ad reps, organizing sponsored business groupings, editing and toning photos for use in the daily paper, and juggling over two dozen clients for the bi-weekly edition of the Big Red Auto Book.

Although I love my current job I have a great longing to do more illustration work.  Currently I like to set aside some time during my lunch hour or during the weekend to draw.  One of my New Year’s resolutions is to create more, so I set up this  website to serve as a blog/dumping ground for my past, current, and future projects.

I’m always available for suggestions, comments, critiques, or freelance work.  Please feel free to contact me at laura.fear@yahoo.com

With Love,

Miss Fear
